With the recent passing of Elizabeth Edwards, not only was I stunned, but also heart-broken after meeting her earlier this year. I met Edwards at Life 101 at Nova Southeastern University in February 2010. Working at The Current, I was the only press photographer allowed into the event, per Edwards' request. It was a privilege to be able to photograph her.
When she first walked in to the VIP party, she seemed very quiet and a little nervous. After she was introduced to the room, the first thing she did was walk up to one of the open spots at a cocktail table and introduce herself. One of the guests was stunned and shrieked as she saw Edwards standing next to her. The rest of the VIP party was like that; full of laughter and conversation.
As the main event proceeded, I listened to Edwards describe her life. I was amazed at the way she carried herself and the grace she possessed. She even discussed the hard times in her life, which none of us expected her to speak about. The more she spoke, the more I came to respect her.
Many students did not understand why they brought Edwards to NSU—especially since they had been trying have her come for a long time. After meeting her and listening to her speak, I understand why they worked so hard to bring her to Life 101. She was truly an inspiration.
These are just a few of the photos I was able to capture of her. May she rest in peace.
